Spring Training in Clearwater & Dunedin

The Phillies and the Blue Jays play twenty minutes apart, and our vacation rentals sit right between the ballparks and the beach. Here is how to do baseball season the Gulf Coast way.

Baseball in the morning paper, beach by lunch, first pitch at 1:05

Every spring from late February through late March, the Grapefruit League takes over Florida's Gulf Coast, and this corner of Pinellas County is its beating heart. The Philadelphia Phillies train at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, and the Toronto Blue Jays are just up the road at TD Ballpark in Dunedin, where they have trained for more than 50 years, the longest one-town spring residency in baseball.

Book a Sunny Orange Stays rental and you can spend your morning on the sand, catch an afternoon game at an intimate 8,500-seat park where the players are close enough to hear, and be back on the beach in time for sunset at Pier 60. Schedules for each spring are released the previous fall, and the best rental homes for March go even earlier, so plan ahead.

Two teams, 20 minutes apart

The Phillies in Clearwater and the Blue Jays in Dunedin. Stay once, see both, and catch them facing each other.

Small parks, big access

Both ballparks hold about 8,500 fans. Every seat is close, and berm lawn tickets make it an easy family outing.

Beach and baseball, same day

Most games start early afternoon. Morning swim, first pitch at 1:05, and back on the sand for sunset.

Half the league within reach

The Yankees in Tampa, Pirates in Bradenton, Orioles in Sarasota, and Tigers in Lakeland are all easy day trips.

The home teams

Philadelphia Phillies BayCare Ballpark, Clearwater

The Phillies have called Clearwater their spring home since 1947, and BayCare Ballpark is a classic: 7,300 fixed seats plus a grassy outfield berm, Frenchy's and the beach twenty minutes west, and a Tiki bar in right field. Home dates run from late February to late March, with marquee visits from the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays most springs.

Toronto Blue Jays TD Ballpark, Dunedin

The Jays have trained in Dunedin since their first season in 1977, baseball's longest one-town spring residency. TD Ballpark was fully renovated in 2020, and it sits blocks from downtown Dunedin's breweries, restaurants, and the Pinellas Trail. Catch the Phillies-Jays matchups for the best rivalry atmosphere of the spring.

Where to stay for spring training

Late February and March are the Gulf Coast's peak season, when rates and occupancy top out, so the calendar matters as much as the location. A few honest pointers from the people who manage the homes:

  • Clearwater Beach puts you 15 to 20 minutes from BayCare Ballpark with the beach at your doorstep. The classic choice for Phillies fans.
  • Dunedin rentals put the Blue Jays, downtown breweries, and Honeymoon Island within minutes. Book these earliest; Dunedin is small and Jays fans are loyal.
  • Island Estates, Sand Key, and Belleair offer quieter homes minutes from the causeway, an easy split between both parks.
  • Book by early winter. March is our single busiest month of the year, with rates at their annual peak. The best homes for spring training weeks are reserved before the schedules even drop.
  • Staying a month? Snowbird-season monthly rentals cover the whole spring slate of both teams for less per night.

March is peak season

Our booking data shows March rates run the highest of the year, about a third above the fall months, and occupancy touches 87%. Early birds win.

Frequently asked questions

When is spring training in Clearwater and Dunedin?

Games run from late February through late March each year, with pitchers and catchers reporting in mid-February. Each team publishes its schedule the previous fall, and single-game tickets typically go on sale in the winter.

Where do the Phillies play spring training?

At BayCare Ballpark, 601 Old Coachman Rd in Clearwater, their spring home since 1947. It holds about 8,500 fans between the fixed seats and the outfield berm, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive from our Clearwater Beach rentals.

Where do the Blue Jays play spring training?

At TD Ballpark, 373 Douglas Ave in Dunedin, fully renovated in 2020. The Jays have trained in Dunedin since 1977, the longest one-town spring residency in baseball, and the park sits blocks from downtown Dunedin.

How far apart are the two ballparks?

About six miles, roughly a 20 minute drive. Plenty of visitors see a Phillies game one day and a Jays game the next from the same rental, and the two teams play each other several times most springs.

How early should I book a rental for spring training?

By early winter at the latest. March is the busiest, highest-rate month of the year on our calendar, and homes near Dunedin especially are reserved months before the season starts. Monthly rentals for the full spring slate go earliest of all.

Can I see other teams while I am here?

Yes. The Yankees train in Tampa about 35 minutes away, the Pirates in Bradenton and Orioles in Sarasota about an hour, and the Tigers in Lakeland about 75 minutes. Half the Grapefruit League is within an easy day trip.
